A helicopter has crashed at Burlington Airpark shortly after 1 p.m. One person has been taken to hospital with head injuries, according to reports.
An eye witness at the scene said a gust of wind caused the pilot to lose control of the helicopter. He ended up hitting his head, but was otherwise not injured. There was one other person on board.
Both runways have been closed to takeoffs and landings.
At the airpark, a visibly-damaged, Sprint Mechanical, Sikorsky S-58T helicopter was seen resting near the main runways. It is registered to Zimmer Air out of St. Thomas. This type of aircraft first flew in 1954, and the T-version was introduced in the early 1970s. Spring Mechanical, out of Etobicoke uses it as part of its aerial crane service.
Burlington Fire Department sent six trucks to the site for the emergency scene in north Burlington, but there was no fire. Halton police were on scene as well.
