Looking to embrace a little local history when ushering in the new year tomorrow night?
Why not join Mayor Gord Krantz and others for the annual New Year’s bell ringing at Victoria Park (150 Mary St., beside Town Hall).
Since 1981, Krantz – Canada’s longest-serving mayor – has carried on the tradition first established in 1967. It was started by Jim Dills, then publisher of the Canadian Champion, who was looking for a special way to mark the 100th year of Canada's Confederation.
Joining him for the bell ringing duties this time around will be local historian John McDonald.
The festivities begin at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, with refreshments being served at Hugh Foster Hall.
Event-goers are encouraged to dress warmly for the festive gathering.
