Milton boy hoping for toy-rific support for SickKids fundraiser

Donations now being accepted for Liam’s Toy Drive

Liam Wilson is currently accepting donations for his annual SickKids toy drive.

Upon departing SickKids just a few days before Christmas, Liam Wilson couldn’t contain his excitement.

The Milton five-year-old’s enthusiasm was certainly understandable, but perhaps a bit too vocal for the young patients not so fortunate to be leaving.

“The doctor said ‘I’m happy you’re going home, but not everyone is as lucky as you.’ He felt so bad… he didn’t want to upset any of the other kids,” recalled mom Deana of her now nine year old, who’s become a familiar face at the Toronto children’s hospital due to his cystic fibrosis.

Immediately moved to help SickKids’ patients that night, Liam asked mom about a toy collection – his desire to help overshadowing the timeframe reality of his request.

But the local boy wouldn’t be completely denied.

“We got a crap ton of gift cards and brought them over,” said Deana. “We told them ‘It’s not a lot, but hopefully it helps.”

Thus marked the genesis of what’s become an integral part of Liam’s Mission – the annual toy drive.

With recent support secured by Burlington Helping Burlington and Mississauga’s Build It -- among others -- the fundraiser is poised for its latest growth surge since its modest beginnings.

That’s going to make for an awfully busy pre-holiday stretch for Deana and her volunteer team. But as coincidence – or fate – would have it, the fundraiser boom comes on the heels of Liam’s latest hospital stay, which offered mother and son a renewed sense of purpose regarding their efforts.

“Honestly, they were amazing. I mean they’re always great, but this time…” said Deana, whose youngster was recently granted a unique Make a Wish Canada gift involving a certain Maple Leafs superstar. “The nurses were fantastic. They were over the top in making sure Liam was always OK.”

Toy donations are being accepted for children of all ages until Dec. 7, with drop-off locations across all communities in Halton.

Among the suggested items being accepted are Lego kits, colouring books, cars and trucks, slime kits, Hot Wheels, ukuleles, Play-Doh, craft kits, board games, activity books, sensory balls and fidget toys.

Gift cards for such places as the movies, Indigo, Starbucks or restaurants or grocery stores are also welcome.

Participants will be entered into a draw for a pair of Maple Leafs tickets.
