Hopes for a local brother and sister on the Olympic court this summer came to an end yesterday (July 3), as Kyle Alexander was among those released from the men’s basketball training camp.
The 6-foot-9 27 year old – who grew up in Milton – was part of an initial 20-man roster deep with NBA talent that’s felt to be one of Canada’s strongest Olympic teams ever.
His older sister Kayla, 33, will make her second Olympic appearance later this month. Named to the women's team on Tuesday, she was part of Canada's ninth-place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
Kyle attended Orangeville Prep and first played soccer and volleyball before taking up basketball in Grade 11.
He went on to play for the University of Tennessee Volunteers, helping them reach the NCAA Sweet 16 in his senior year.
From there he signed a two-way contract with the Miami Heat and was assigned to their NBA G League affiliate Sioux Falls SkyForce.
He last played for Hapoel Tel Aviv of the Israeli Basketball Premier League and was part of the Canadian team that beat the U.S. for bronze at last year's FIBA World Cup.
