Calling all artists, the South Asian Mommies of Milton (SAMM) are inviting local creatives to take part in the third annual Kala: Colours of South Asia Art Exhibit.
SAMM has created an artists' call for those who wish to take part in the celebration of the subcontinent. It is open to both established and emerging artists -- as well as any artist of any background.
However, the work must reflect this year’s theme: Echoes of Home.
The works of those chosen will be on display in the FirstOntario Centre’s Holcim Gallery, where the exhibition will take place between May 21 and June 7.
“Even if you're not of South Asian descent, but you've lived there all your life or if your family is from there, then you can still participate as long as your stuff matches what our theme is,” organizer Diksha Pal Narayan told MiltonToday.
The theme the year before was, similar to the title of the event, Colours of South Asia, which Pal Narayan says could have been anything that reflects that part of the world. But Echoes of Home was chosen for 2025 because, she says, “there is something in you that still relates to the immigrant story.”
“It could be the food that you eat, it could be the way that you dress or the festivities that you celebrate. Even though you were born here, you would still have some echoes of the home that your parents or your grandparents came from.”
The deadline to apply is Mar. 22. Exhibition hopefuls are asked to fill out a form, where additional contest rules and requirements are also provided.
An official gallery opening with pomp and circumstance is also scheduled for May 23 starting at 7 p.m., where diverse artists will get to mix and mingle.
Additional details can be found on SAMM’s website.
