Hot off the heels of classes beginning at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Secondary School last fall, ever-growing Milton may soon get a new elementary school right next door.
The Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB) has submitted an application for construction mere metres to the east of St. Kateri on Louis Saint Laurent Avenue, east of Kennedy Circle.
The as-yet-to-be-named school has been given the temporary name of Milton #11 Catholic Elementary School. The HCDSB will strike a committee in the 2025-2026 school year to decide on what it will be called.
The building will be three storeys tall and situated on a 5.3-hectare plot of land subdivided into two areas. The school building will be located, naturally, in the school block and another area will consist of a natural heritage system, including a trail.
A daycare and play area are part of the proposal alongside parking, a bus loop and a parental pick-up area.
HCDSB Chief Financial Officer Ryan Merrick told MiltonToday in an emailed statement that the location of the school was chosen as a sort of enrolment release valve. He said the Milton #11 “will address and alleviate increased student enrolment at St. Peter, St. Scholastica and St. Veronica Catholic Elementary Schools.”
The school will be directly affiliated with its big sister, St. Kateri. Eighth graders graduating from the former will matriculate into the latter to begin their high school studies. The pair will be sharing the accompanying track and field loop.
As things stand now, the HCDSB is proposing an approximate opening date of September 2026. But Merrick cautions that “a number of milestones need to be achieved” before that happens.
One of those milestones is Town council approval. The municipal Commissioner of Development Services Jill Hogan anticipates that will likely be awarded in July of this year.
Additional Information, including design documents, about the development was shared at the Sept. 09, 2024 public meeting.
