A small-town player has wasted no time making a big impact in the major-junior ranks.
Scoring his fourth of the season in Sunday’s 4-3 win over Brantford, Niagara IceDogs freshman Braidy Wassilyn continues to lead OHL rookies with 21 points (4g, 17a).
The 16-year-old Campbellville centre’s productive start isn’t much of a surprise after a dynamic minor league run, which ended as captain and top scorer with the Markham Majors.
A fourth overall pick in last spring’s OHL Priority Selection, Wassilyn was part of Canada Red at this fall’s Under-17 World Challenge. He scored in the gold-medal showdown against Canada White, who prevailed 3-1.
His efforts have helped the IceDogs to a 17-9-1-1 record, good enough for second in the Central Divsion.
