November 16, 1940 – January 4, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Michael Hines on January 4, 2025. Born on November 16, 1940, to William Oscar Hines and Grace Anne (née Robinson), Doug grew up in a loving family with his brothers Ray, Paul, Mauri, and Danny.
Doug was a talented musician who played the clarinet and alto saxophone with the Burlington Band, Nelson High School Concert Band, Nelson High Dance Band, and the Lorne Scots Military Band. He had a special gift for creating harmony, composing and arranging music for piano and vocals, which showcased his creativity and passion for music.
In the mid-1960s, Doug embraced his adventurous spirit as a partner and driver of an amateur stock car at the CNE Grandstand.
Doug was also a dedicated and well-respected educator. With a degree from Sir Wilfrid Laurier University, he taught Industrial Arts and math for the Halton School Board for many years. Known for his unwavering commitment to his students and colleagues, Doug left a lasting legacy in education, inspiring creativity and practical skills as the portal for reflection and growth in countless lives.
Doug and his beloved wife, Jo-Anne (née Hayes), shared a wonderful life together, filled with love, laughter, and memorable moments. In retirement, they cherished their time on their farm in Brantford, hosting family reunions, tending to their century home, and enjoying the beauty of nature. They also found great joy in traveling and exploring the world on cruises.
Doug believed that the essence of life is found in the connections we create and the impact we leave behind. Some of his favorite books, written by Richard Bach, reflected his belief in self-discovery and the enduring presence of love and spirit. As Bach wrote, “Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding, find out what you already know, and you’ll see the way to fly.”
Doug is survived by his wife, Jo-Anne; his children, Michael (Gina) and Jennifer (Clark); his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Paul (Marlene, deceased) and Mauri (Sarah) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Ray (Edna, both deceased) and Danny (Janis).
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home- Burlington (2241 New Street, Burlington) from 12-1 p.m. with a funeral service beginning in the Funeral Home Chapel at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Burlington Memorial Gardens (3353 Guelph Line, Burlington). Jo-Anne wishes to extend an invitation to all to attend and celebrate Doug’s extraordinary life.
